Dodgeball

Murphy’s Law has kicked in again and the Debian ftp server is down. Wachovia is also down, and I’m unable to update my account information. I guess the terrorists really have won. However, I did manage to painlessly installed the latest build of VMWare 4.5.2.

I met with Juan, Sanjay, Luke, and David to have dinner at Don Pablo’s before heading to the AMC Parkway to see Dodgeball. It’s an extremely fun movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Friday night movies are turning out to be a regular affair.

Domino

More Domino woes as the smtp and pop3 server components failed to respond. Mark and I concluded that the true reason is probably buried somewhere deep within the proprietary labyrinth of the Webmin configuration interface. It looks like it may be easier to simply re-install the entire system.

In search of a utility to generate documentation similar to Javadoc, but for C, I discovered Doxygen, a system for C, C++, and an assortment of other languages of the same family that generates both HTML and LaTeX output. The system can parse files written using a variety of commenting formats. There are currently quite a few projects currently using this system.

Hash Tables

The students had to write a simple variation of fgets to support infinite size line lengths during lab. During office hours I began work on an upcoming assignment (Lab 8) involving structures, linked lists, stacks, and hash tables. The latest update in Debian also broke Straw. Not being able to read RSS feeds is a real pain.

To Atlanta

There was a fair amount of rain on the way back to Atlanta but I made good time and arrived safely by late afternoon, with my recent orders from Amazon waiting for me in the mail. I joined Juan, Luke, Alan, Jose, and Sanjay for another eventful gettogether in the evening at The Highlander. Their patty melt plate is amazing.

I installed America’s Army on Linux after using lvextend to allocate more disk space to game, but unfortunately didn’t get a chance to play. Instead, Mark and I pulled out our hairs debugging a Lotus Notes/Domino server running Red Hat that was segfaulting on server startup. The server powers the Innovative Media Technology web site. Lotus Domino is a groupware enterprise product that provides e-mail, calendaring, and web access. The bulk of the configuration is accomplished through the notes.ini file. It appears to be written mostly in Java and an amalgam of shell scripts. The Lotus Domino 6 for Linux manual provided some useful information that got me up to speed on things. The problem was eventually found to be a cyclical directory structure that was causing nsd to infinite loop.

Shrek 2

I always have the most vivid and strangest dreams when I’m here at home. I guess it’s because my bedroom reminds me a lot of my high school and middle school experiences. My sister Tiasha and I went to see Shrek 2 at the movies after dinner. It’s pretty good, and it seemed like my sister was pretty excited about it also.

Grandfather

I completed some computer errands around the house, and met my grandfather from dad’s side of the family. He is here with us for a few weeks to visit. It was effectively like meeting him for the first time, since I don’t remember him from when I was a child visiting India with my parents. Come to think of it, I don’t actually remember any of my relatives, but it doesn’t really bother me that much for whatever reason.

In the world of ordinary, I met with Ryan in the evening to have dinner at Steak ‘n Shake, and watched the Robocop movie series at his place.

To Mobile

Ordered a 512 MB stick of DDR memory from Corsair in order to upgrade a machine or two. Recitation covered the string library functions in C and hopefully resolved all questions regarding the first exam. The TA meeting in the afternoon went a little shorter than usual, and I was able to leave a few hours earlier than expected for Mobile. I arrived safely sometime close to midnight.
