So, I'm not so good at conveying the whole "kidding" thing over a text medium, but I did learn some very informative tidbits in the process.

Also, very pleased to be introduced to Mr. Barik. It's quite an interesting compromise; I'd guess the authors tend to prefer the embargo model. We poor folks can't complain too much when stuff ends up free anyway, but the embargo model is quite nice for authors as (at least in LJ's case) it pays the authors for their contributions rather than the reverse.

Published?! A reason for celebration indeed! Next time you're in town your hot chocolate (or other celebratory drink) is on me. high fives

Hi Stacie, this is Titus's father and naturally proud of his first major publication. I am a scientist in the biomedical field and have strongly supported Open Access both as a writer and an editor. FYI, there are currently two major models adopted by Open Access journals: Embargo or Pay. The 1-mo embargo of LJ is one of the shortest in the industry; in most journals it's about 1 yr. In the Pay model, the journal charges the author $500-$1000, and provides free access worldwide. Actually, if you tell them you are poor, they promptly waive the fee! So, until Bill Gates or George Soros steps in, these two models will remain the compromise middle ground. Cheers.

Not really. I retain the copyright to the article, which a policy that is a lot more liberal than most magazines. Furthermore, I can reprint and redistribute it after the April issue appears on the shelves. It's a fair compromise, in my opinion. And with the exception of the newest issues, the remaining articles on the Linux Journal web site are free to read by anyone and do not require a paid account. See the author guide for more details.

Sadly, it requires a (paid) subscription to create an online account. I know it makes sense because of printing and distribution costs, but does it strike you as ironic that a subscription to Linux Journal costs money?

This is sort of like an early birthday present, I guess. I'm putting the comment I want on your Web site, right inside the pages you've built. =)
