I am a scientist in the biomedical field and have strongly supported Open Access both as a writer and an editor. FYI, there are currently two major models adopted by Open Access journals: Embargo or Pay. The 1-mo embargo of LJ is one of the shortest in the industry; in most journals it's about 1 yr. In the Pay model, the journal charges the author $500-$1000, and provides free access worldwide. Actually, if you tell them you are poor, they promptly waive the fee! So, until Bill Gates or George Soros steps in, these two models will remain the compromise middle ground. I retain the copyright to the article, which a policy that is a lot more liberal than most magazines. Furthermore, I can reprint and redistribute it after the April issue appears on the shelves. It's a fair compromise, in my opinion. And with the exception of the newest issues, the remaining articles on the Linux Journal web site are free to read by anyone and do not require a paid account.
