Why Not to Use Free (as in Beer) Software

SmartFTP is a perfect illustration why free is not the same thing as open source:

Unfortunately, after offering a free product and a free service to millions of users for more than 10 years we are no longer able to do so. We would like to thank you for using SmartFTP and we hope to welcome you as a customer in the future. Thank you for your understanding.

  1. As a formerly avid user of SmartFTP, I’m a little sad to see that it’s come to this. It’s not really a surprise though, as they started adding things like an unregistered version notice and requiring licenses for commercial use a while back. Luckily, excellent open source alternatives like FileZilla have risen in that time to fill the void.
